Misdemeanors and Gross Misdemeanors are generally considered “lesser crimes,” and are usually handled in Court of Limited Jurisdiction.

These courts are better known as “district court” or “municipal court” as opposed to Superior Court, where felonies are handled. In Snohomish County, there are four District Courts: Cascade District Court (located in Arlington, Washington), Everett District Court (Everett, Washington), Evergreen District Court (Monroe, Washington) and South District Court (Lynnwood Washington). There are also several municipal courts, which include the courts in Edmonds, Everett, Lynnwood, and Marysville, Washington.

Misdemeanors are crimes that are punishable by a maximum of ninety (90) days in jail and a thousand dollar ($1000) fine. Examples include: Driving with Suspended License in the Third Degree, Negligent Driving in the First Degree, and Disorderly Conduct.

Gross misdemeanors are crimes that are punishable by a maximum of a year (365 days) in jail and a five thousand dollar ($5000) fine. Examples include: Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Reckless Driving, Assault, Theft and Hit and Run (attended and unattended).
